Biotech Sector in BrazilThough generally not perceived to be a biotech front-runner, Brazil has a sizeable biotechnology industry, an important market for biotechnology and related products and an impressive research capacity:
The sector has 350 companies with over 30,000 employees, and a market of USD 6 - 7 billion. Related industries such as human diagnostics, pharmaceuticals/generics, veterinary medicines and seeds gross an annual business volume of USD 20 billion.
There are more than 32,000 biological researchers and a number of universities and research institutions that compare well with US and European institutions. About 9,300 patents were granted in 2000.
The state and federal governments are promoting the industry through new legislation and a variety of support programs. Key sub-sectors include agro-biotech, human and animal healthcare. The industry is concentrated in the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais; the most important biotech cluster of South America is located in Belo Horizonte (MG).
