WSL (Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research)The Swiss Federal Institute of Forest, Snow and Landscape Research (WSL) came into being in 1989 when the Institute of Forest Research was merged with the Swiss Federal Institute of Snow and Avalanche Research.
It comprises three research sections: "Landscape", "Forest" and "Natural hazards". Its main areas of interest are the scientific analysis of land use in Switzerland - landscape management in the heavily urbanized Swiss setting - and disaster research, with an additional emphasis on CO2 emissions and the greenhouse effect. The institute's internationally acclaimed work on sustainable development is of strategic importance.
WSL has its headquarters in Birmensdorf. It has the equivalent of 375 full-time employees and a budget of CHF 50 million.
